Course Description
This course is aimed at students sitting the AQA GCSE English Language (8700) examination. Over 4 days, this course will provide in-depth revision on 4 key question areas: language and structure, compare and evaluate, creative writing, and transactional writing. Students will revise the skills needed to target top band criteria on both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the examination.
Day 1: language and structure
Students will learn how to identify and analyse writers’ language and structure choices for effect. Revision will include planning, language techniques, structural features, sentence form, and subject terminology.
Day 2: compare and evaluate
Students will learn how to offer perceptive comparison and critical evaluation of writers’ ideas and perspectives. Revision will include planning, methods used, supporting points, and paragraphing.
Day 3: Creative writing
Building on revision from Day 1, students will learn how to write adventurous narrative and descriptive writing responses. Revision will include, planning, literary devices, sentence variation, and punctuation.
Day 4: transactional writing
Students will learn how to write convincing and compelling responses to common transactional writing genres. Revision will include planning, form, tone, purpose, and persuasive writing techniques.
Paul
Paul is a CELTA-trained, ex-Head of Academic English, current examiner (CIE, AQA and Edexcel) and private tutor with over 15+ years experience. He has taught English from 11+ to post-graduate. Lessons are student-centred, ensuring work is palatable and resonant to maximise motivation, development and success within varying timescales and schedules. In recent years, Paul has come to specialise in grade boosting and intensive study.
