Course Outline

Session 1:
During the first session, there will be a focus on Topic 1: Cell Biology. This may include:

• Cell structure of prokaryotes and eukaryotes and animal and plant cells.
• Cell specialisation & differentiation
• Microscopy (including Required Practical 1)
• Cell Division
• Transport in Cells (including Required Practical 2 (Combined) and 3 (Biology)

Session 2:
During the second session, there will be focus on Topic 3: Infection & Response. This may include:

• Communicable diseases
• Human Defence Systems
• Vaccination
• Antibiotics
• Drug Development
• Monoclonal Antibodies (Biology only)
• Plant Defences & Response

Session 3:
During the third session, there will be a focus on Topic 4: Bioenergetics. This may include:

• Photosynthesis (including Required Practical 5 (Combined) and 6 (Biology)
• Anaerobic & Aerobic Respiration
• Metabolism

Session 4:
During the fourth session, there will be a focus on Topic 5: Homeostasis & Response. This may include:

• Homeostasis
• The Human Nervous System (including Required Practical 6 (Combined) and 7 (Biology)
• Hormonal Coordination in Humans
• Hormonal Coordination in Plants
